Doug was born in 1953 in Bellingham, Washington. He was raised in the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island; B.C. Doug's family is of Salish ancestry. His father is a member of the Lummi Band near Bellingham, Washington; his mother is a member of the Tsawout Band in East Saanich, B.C. Doug's grandfather, Richard Harry, was the Tsawout Band's last hereditary chief.

Doug completed his schooling in Victoria, and then took a fine art course at Camosun College in 1970. He also took a logging course & heavy equipment operator's course in 1971. Uncertain of what he intended to do, he went logging until 1972, when a visit to master carver Simon Charlie's at Koksilah kindled a desire to carve. Simon, already a world-renowned artist, took Doug as an apprentice, & it was here with Simon's teaching, Guidance, & influence that Doug developed his distinctive & successful style. La Fortune is among the first of a new generation of artists to receive Salish art.
