Ivan
Thomas
Nuu-chah-nulth Artist
Ivan is a Nuu Chah Nulth
artist born at the Tseshaht First Nation located in Port Alberni. After
graduating in 1991, Ivan moved to Vancouver where he pursued his interest
in his Nuu-chah-nulth (West Coast) art.
He studied under master carver Derek Wilson, a resident of Vancouver.
Ivan studiously worked at developing his own interpretations of aboriginal
west coast designs on sterling silver and gold jewlery. After two years
of apprenticing, Ivan felt comfortable enough about his work to start
selling to galleries. Ivan’s work is in great demand and can be found
in many galleries.
Ivan collaborates with
other artists and is always picking up new tips on how to improve his
work. One of Ivan’s immediate goals is to further his studies in working
with semi precious stones and developing new techniques in metal. He
plans to this by attending a two-year course at a
community college.
