Dennis Matilpi

Dennis was born at Alert Bay, B.C. on April 6, 1951. His parents are John and Mary Maltipi. He has four children. Three of his brothers and a niece are also artists. He has been carving since 1973 and was taught by his brother, Lloyd Wadhams. He is from the Kwakiutl Nation and his village is located on the north end of Vancouver Island. Dennis grew up and lived at Alert Bay, Kingcome Inlet and Gilford Island. He went to school at Alert Bay and then moved to Surrey, B.C. where he completed his education. Dennis carves mostly with silver and gold. He produces beautiful earrings, pendants, broaches and bracelets. When he has time he carves with wood and you may find him, at any time, working on a totem pole. His inspiration came from his surroundings where totem poles of years gone by still stand with grace and beauty. Dennis enjoys sports and likes to play the occasional soccer game when he has the time.
