Derald Scoular
Salish Artist
Derald was born in Garden
Bay, B.C. in 1960 to Donald and Brenda Scoular. His native heritage
is of the Salish Indian, stemming from grandmothers on both sides, Rous/Page,
and can be traced back to the Lilloet and Sechelt Indian Bands. Derald
grew up in Pender Harbour, B.C.
He began carving Native
art in 1980 under the guidance of carver Jean Brabrant of Victoria and
Uncle Randy Stiglitz of Vancouver. He then continued on developing his
own technique and style. Derald has since carved several different types
of masks and totem poles. These pieces are found throughout Canada,
USA and Europe. Derald is currently working on several projects including
a 20-foot totem pole. He is continuing to challenge himself as an artist
and carver.
