Sandy Johnson
Kwaguilth

Sandy was born, August 16, 1963 to Sam and Lena Johnson at Alert Bay, B.C. His village is located on the northern tip of Vancouver Island at a place called Gifford Island. He credits himself for learning the technique of carving. He remembers his father instructing him to pick up a carving knife and get busy carving. "Don't be coming into my carving shop expecting to just watch me work". His dad would say to Sandy. Two of his brothers are painters and also are carvers. Sandy attended school in Comox, New Westminster, Surrey and Parksville B.C. He grew up at Alert Bay and Gifford Island. Most of Sandy's work is done in cedar. He also has painted on canvas. He has been carving for the past 13 years. His Hok, Hok, and Crooked Beak masks can be used in the traditional ceremonies. He currently has a Crooked Beak Mask in our gallery.
